Scheuberin is a Legend — A5 Sampler Kit (Fabric/Calico)
This A5 printed fabric sampler pays tribute to Helena Scheuberin; a fierce and intelligent woman who stood up to Heinrich Kramer, the notorious author of the Malleus Maleficarum (1486), and won.
Accused of witchcraft in the late 15th century, Scheuberin was outspoken and unafraid. Thanks to her high social status and powerful husband, she was able to publicly challenge Kramer’s authority, ultimately contributing to his excommunication from the Church and the loss of his position. Her defiance enraged him so much that it’s widely believed her case inspired him to write his infamous witch-hunting manual - a book that went on to fuel the persecution of thousands of women across Europe.
But Helena Scheuberin is not a footnote in history. She is a legend.
And in this piece, she’s remembered as such.
A stitched halo of the word "legend" surrounds her name, a visual celebration of her courage and refusal to be silenced. It’s a reminder that bravery in the face of cruelty should be honoured—not forgotten.
